I use the "low heat" burn in sticks from Mohawk with a torch and burn in knife. The softer sticks can be leveled with a lot less aggressive sanding and work just as well. They come in many colors and you can melt several colors on a pad of paper to color match. Then touch up other areas such as gaps in side binding.

Yet another great tip from Mr. O'Brien. I really appreciate you posting these. :D

IME it's helpful to get the lacquer stick as level as possible with the burn in knife. It's easier than sanding. The electric knives are a nice luxury if you can spare the dough.
